Daniel Rye was hunting for missing journalist James Foley in Syria when he was kidnapped. What followed was 13 months of torture at the hands of ISIS thugs, including the now infamous Jihadi John.
In a cruel twist of fate, he did in fact find James Foley. Sadly, it was only when they were both hostages.
Luckily, Daniel’s family managed to raise the £1.5 million the kidnappers were demanding for his release thanks to a public appeal.
We now know what he went through after writer Puk Damsgård penned the harrowing story in a new book Isis Hostage: One Man’s True Story Of 13 Months In Captivity about the worst year of James’ life. The MailOnline has featured a large excerpt that really sends a chill down the spine.
In the story, we find out that Daniel was beaten to within an inch of his life, was forced to watch executions, and even attempted to commit suicide during his year of hell.
Daniel describes four of his kidnappers as the ‘Beatles’; naming them Paul, George, Ringo and John.
Describing the moment Daniel watched another prisoner’s execution, the excerpt states: “The hostages were asked to hold up A4 sheets of paper in front of them bearing the message: ‘I don’t want to end like him. Pay 2 M. Go to Danish Government’.
“The man’s lips were moving in prayer.
“John was standing behind him with a Glock pistol; ‘Ringo’ was filming from the other side of the grave; George was choreographing the entire scene.
“‘Look into the camera and hold your pages towards the camera!’ shouted Ringo.
“‘Don’t fuck up, Daniel, or we’ll shoot you!’ George chimed in.
“John took a few steps back and shot the man in the back of the head, so that he toppled over, head first, then landed on his back with his legs against the wall of the grave.
“John went over to the grave and sent eight more shots into the dead man’s chest.”
The story goes on to describe the beatings that Daniel was forced to endure every day. A month in, after a particularly brutal beating, he attempted suicide. His attempt failed and his hostages were said to ‘cheer’ that his effort was in vain.
Luckily, he managed to escape thanks to a massive effort to fund raise by his family. Sadly, not everyone is as lucky. James Foley, who he was searching for, was decapitated.
