A British engineer has been arrested by police in Bangladesh on suspicion of being involved in last month’s deadly siege at a cafe in Dhaka that saw 22 people killed.

A police spokesman confirmed that Hasnat Karim, a British citizen of Bangladeshi origin, was detained on Wednesday night.

Also being held in connection with the siege was Canadian student Tahmid Khan, who attends the University of Toronto

A.K.M Shahidur Rahman, a police spokesman in Dhaka said: ‘We can confirm that they were arrested under Section 54 of CrPC (criminal procedure),’ referring to a law under which police can detain someone for suspicion over any crime.’

Karim was seized by police in Dhaka for questioning after the attack by ISIS on July 1 on the Holey Artisan western-style cafe.

Relatives said Karim, who holds dual Bangladesh and British nationality, was used as a human shield by jihadis during the attack after going to the cafe with his wife to celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
