BSP MLA Mohammed Alim, who was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court here in connection with a 13-year-old rape case, was today granted bail by the District and Sessions Court in Muzaffarnagar.

According to prosecution, District Judge Dilip Kumar Shrivastava granted bail to Alim after he furnished two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.

The BSP MLA legislator had yesterday appeared for bail before a local court here but his plea was rejected by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jitender Kumar and was sent to judicial custody.

The Bulandshahr MLA then approached the District and Sessions Court which also rejected his interim bail plea and posted the matter for today.

Police had freed 48 Nepali girls from Apollo Circus from June 5, 2003 here after complaints that they were sexually exploited by company owners Alim and his brother Mohammed Yunus. Medical examination confirmed rape.

The then Chief Minister Mayawati had handed over the case to CB-CID in 2004.

The CB-CID had given clean chit to the accused in its final report to the court, which rejected it and ordered Alim and his brother to appear before it.

Despite repeated issue of warrants, the accused failed to appear before the court.
