Visakhapatnam: Thousands of people thronged RK Beach on Friday evening to witness the final dress rehearsal for the operational demonstration to be held on Navy Day on December 4. This year, around 24 ships and 17 aircraft are to take part in the demonstration to showcase the naval capabilities.

Navy Day is observed every year to commemorate India’s victory in the India-Pakistan war in 1971 when missile boats of the Indian Navy carried out a deadly attack on Karachi Harbour. As part of the operational demonstration, the capability and versatility of the naval ships, aircraft and special forces were showcased. Skilled skydivers of the naval skydiving team jumped off a Dornier Aircraft from 6,000 feet height followed by manoeuvres by destroyers, corvettes, fast attack craft and landing ships, beach assault by marine commandos, close range anti-aircraft firing, naval band performance, formation anchoring where beautifully illumined ships stood in the sea and a host of other exercises.

This year has also been an eventful one for ENC as the International Fleet Review was held in Vizag in February where more than 50 countries participated. Naval enclaves are on various stages of implementation as well. “The Navy operates some of the most modern ships and submarines besides maritime patrol aircraft. INS Kadmatt, the second indigenously built anti-submarine warfare corvette, was commissioned in Vizag in January this year. Besides, Highly manoeuvrable fast attack crafts INS Tarmugli and INS Tihayu were also commissioned this year. Seven Hawk aircraft were also inducted into the Navy besides commissioning of INS Karma, the base for Indian Navy’s Marcos in Vizag,” said ENC chief vice-admiral HCS Bisht.
