Mumbai: Maharashtra government has accorded the ‘martyr’ status to the four city fire brigade officials who lost their lives in the line of duty last year.

Urban Development department issued a government resolution (GR) in this regard three days ago.

Mumbai fire brigade officers Sunil Nesrikar, Sudhir Amin, Sanjay Rane and Madhusudan Desai died due to the injuries suffered during the fire-fighting at Gokul Nivas building in Kalbadevi area of south Mumbai on May 9, 2015.

Mumbai mayor Snehal Ambekar welcomed the decision today, the civic body BMC said in a statement.

BMC had earlier at a special meeting passed resolution recommending martyr status to the four deceased officers.

Death of four of its senior fire brigade officials had made 2015 the worst year in the history of the 128-yr-old Mumbai Fire Brigade.

It led to formation of a committee to prevent such deaths in future.
