Two policemen in Bhiwandi on Wednesday were caught red-handed while they were allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000, Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials said.

Constables Sandeep Vaidya and Rajendra Sonawane, both aged 30, attached to Police Control room at Bhiwandi, had recently demanded Rs 15,000 bribe from a complainant, a sand supplier, by threatening to lodge a false case against him, Inspector Sanjay Sadigle told PTI.

According to the complainant, the two constables on many occasions in the past had intercepted his trucks supplying sand and use to threaten drivers asking to shell out money or else they will take action against him on charges of illegally transporting sand.

He then filed a complaint with Thane unit of the ACB on Tuesday and after which a trap was laid at Vanzarpatti Naka last evening, the officer said.

A case under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act was lodged against the two constables and further investigations were on, added Sadigle.
