A lot of mothers these days are opting for ‘breast milk suppression’ medicines, which halts the production of milk in lactating mothers.

While it’s an useful advancement for those babies, who are lactose-intolerant or have any other medical conditions which requires the mother to breastfeed the baby , this medicine is hugely being misused by a large number of mothers, who are unwilling to breast feed or want to get rid of the breast-pain caused by excessive milk.

Doctors from several private hospitals are prescribing these medicines to mothers, who do not need it.

“If a mother has any physical difficulty or the newborn has an allergy to milk, only then milk suppression medicines should be used,” suggests gynaecologist Partha Mukherjee.

Going for these suppression medicines is detrimental to baby’s growth as mother’s milk is rich in nutrients. Moreover, it is harmful for mothers as it can lead to kidney, liver and heart conditions later in life. It might also increase the risk of breast cancer.

“Don’t take these medicines. Feeding breast milk to your baby is good for you and your baby’s health,” doctors suggest.
