Country’s largest lender State Bank of India today donated Rs 1.15 crore for ophthalmic equipment for non-paying patients and surgery instrument for an operation theatre to L V Prasad Eye Institute here.

SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya said the bank every year spends 1 per cent of its net profit towards corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Replying to a query, she said as the bank has been functioning through an Act of Parliament, it would attract the mandated 2 per cent spend on CSR.

The SBI chief said the public lender recently launched SBI Digital Villages with an aim to popularise digital banking in rural areas with facilities such as ATM, free wi-fi and technology training sessions for the villagers.

The bank is planning to provide facilities to download education material and offer telemedicine in the Digital Villages.

“SBI plans to bring 100 villages under this initiative across the country by the end of 2016-17,” she added.

During 2015-16, SBI had spent Rs 143.92 crore towards CSR activities, a bank statement said.
