Strong quake of 6.4 hits coastal area of eastern Japan; tsunami threat ruled out

Tokyo: Coastal area of eastern Japan has been  struck off by a strong earthquake on Friday, No immediate news of any injuries or damage has been reported till now.

The quake of 6.4 magnitude that was  shallow hit at 09:14 AM (0544 IST), about 150 kilometres east-southeast of Katsuura city, as reported by the US Geological Survey .

According to the reports of the Japan Meteorological Agency, there was no threat of a tsunami, which measured it at a slightly higher 6.5 magnitude. Every year, Japan experiences a number of relatively violent quakes, as it rests at the junction of four tectonic plates, but rigid building codes and their strict enforcement make it safe against strong quakes.

A massive undersea quake however that hit in March 2011 that caused a tsunami barrelling into Japan’s northeast coast, leaving more than 18,000 people dead or missing, and sending three reactors into meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

In April, two more strong earthquakes hit southern Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture followed by more than 1,700 aftershocks, and left at least 50 dead and caused widespread damage.
