NOIDA: A statue of Dr B R Ambedkar was allegedly vandalized in a park on Wednesday afternoon in Sector 37. While local residents and members of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) gathered at the spot and started protest, senior officials of district administration and police reached the venue and controlled the situation.

There is a human-size statue and three small statues, each about one foot tall of Ambedkar installed in the park, which is adjacent to the community centre. The local residents usually visit the park in the morning and evening. In the afternoon, some people vandalized the statue and fled the spot.

BSP district president Lal Singh Gautam said that he came to know about the incident at around 2 pm. “We immediately reached the spot and found the statue vandalized. The right hand of one of the small statues was broken. The desecrated hand was found on the ground,” he said.

No other statues or property were damaged in the park. The entry gate of the park is unmanned and any outsider can easily come. The incident took place when it was raining and most local residents were at home.

Gautam said that some anti-social element has done this mischievous act to escalate tensions among the local people. A police team immediately reached the spot and covered the statue.
