Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu starrer Pink is hitting the audience hard for all the right reasons. Besides being a film which defines the significance of the words “no” and “consent” the movie has brought into view some very important information regarding the FIR laws and the legal rights of women, which most people are unaware about.

The film revolves around three young independent girls of Delhi, who are mostly unaware of their legal rights.

In one scene Tapsee Pannu’s character Meenal goes to a police station to file a complaint against a group of boys, who are threatening her and her friends, after she injured one of the boys in self-defence. After giving her a brief about moral “gyan” the police officer then refuses to take complaint saying that the incident took place at some other area, which does not belong to this police station. Later, when Meenal goes to a senior police officer, he tells her about the concept of Zero FIR, according to which irrespective of the jurisdiction in which the crime has happened any and every police station is bound to take the FIR and transfer it to the concerned police station later.

In another scene, Meenal gets arrested and while her friends try to get her bail they go to a lawyer and the lawyer asks them to come on Monday, as she cannot get a bail on weekends. This is where enters the character Deepak Sehgal, a retired lawyer, played by Amitabh Bachchan, and tells them that a woman or a minor can get a bail on weekends and the bail proceedings can be heard at a judge’s residence on Saturday and Sunday.

To make sure that people, especially young women, get to know about these laws the central government is planning to use this movie to spread awareness, said a report by TOI.

According to the report, the director of Pink Shoojit Sircar has said that he is getting phone calls from the central government senior officers about taking the film to schools and colleges to spread awareness.

A woman needs to know about laws to come forward and raise a voice. Using Shoojit Sircar’s endeavour to spread the awareness among people is a very much welcoming and refreshing step by the government.
