Now the story goes like, this girl Veeravati (Veera) goes to her parent’s place on her first Karva Chauth. Her loving brothers light some fire and show the glow in the sky, saying that it was moon, so that she could break the fast and eat something. They did it out of affection for their younger sister. But, because Veeravati breaks the fast, her husband dies (So, the fear factor put in the fast).

Here is the twist. Veeravati’s husband not just dies, but has hundreds of needs pierced in his body (Pitamaha Bhishma?!) Now, this why women are forbidden to touch any kind of needle or knofe or anything sharp throughout the aauspicios day of Karva Chauth and I thought they are not supposed to carry them because they might harm someone in the frustration of hunger. Silly me!

Anyway back to the story, so now the poor girl Veera prays to Shiva and Parvati and goes on taking those needles till it is next Karva Chauth (she kept a corpse at home for one year and no one raised a single eyebrow!!). But as the last needle is left on her husband’s body (who is a king too), she goes to buy Karva (an earthern little pot) for her fast. And the clever maid (read the vamp) pulls out the last needle.

The king regains consciousness and takes the maid as his wife (he had some memory loss too it seems!!!). The poor Veeravati waits and fasts, with a lot of tolerance. Hat’s off to her tolerance.

Suddenly one day when the king was going out, he asked his wife and maid, what do they want? The wife (actually the maid) asks for jewellery and the maid (actually the wife) asks for a pair of identical doll. After getting the dolls, Veeravati kept saying this story of changed roles to the doll (Rani became Goli, Goli became Rani, goli probably was the name of the maid). When the curious king asked about it, Veera told the truth. Now the king realised his mistake (Oh,now!) and accepted Veera as her queen because throughout this time Veervati could not just go to her husband and tell the truth. May be because he did not ask. Another lesson for women — Do not say anything until and unless you are asked to.

So, you want a good husband? Fast. You want to protect your husband and children? Fast. Logic ehh?
