Addressing the media at circuit house in Rampur on Monday evening, Samajwadi Party leader and UP minister Azam Khan on Tuesday claimed that the Bulandshahr gangrapes could be a political conspiracy ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

“We must also probe whether this entire controversy is a move by some Opposition elements to defame the government. People who want to come to power may be stooping this low for political interests,” the minister said.

‘Jab vote ke liye Congress hazar dange karwa sakti hai. Vote ke liye Gujarat ho sakta hai, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli or Kairana ho sakta hai toh ye kyu nahi. Bapu (Gandhi) zinda hote to shyad ye na hota but in logo ne unko bhi marwa dia,” Khan said, urging the government to launch a probe.

On Friday night, a group of dacoits had waylaid a family travelling from Noida to Shahjahanpur by car, dragged the woman and her 14-year-old daughter out of the vehicle to a field, and raped them while the men were held at gunpoint.

Three accused in the case were on Monday sent to judicial custody. Uttar Pradesh Police had on Sunday arrested the three accused and detained a dozen others after launching a massive hunt for a gang of dacoits suspected to be behind the highway crime.
