SRINAGAR,India: Government forces in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir have removed dozens of black and Pakistani flags hoisted by protesters following the killing of a top rebel leader.
Life remained paralyzed and streets deserted as police and paramilitary soldiers with automatic rifles and in riot gear enforced a strict curfew for the 12th straight day Wednesday in the disputed region.
Pakistan says it provides diplomatic and moral support to the rebels fighting for Kashmir’s independence from India or merger with Pakistan.
The largest street protests in recent years erupted after Indian troops killed a popular young rebel leader on July 8, leading to deadly clashes that left dozens of people dead and hundreds injured.
