The twin modifications were allegedly meant to rig the deal in favour of AgustaWestland, which eventually walked away with the order to supply 12 choppers for the VIP squadron. The arrest of former IAF chief SP Tyagi comes at a time when the Modi government has framed its contentious decision to invalidate the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as part of his campaign against corruption and can, coupled with the chargesheeting of former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi in another high-profile corruption case, train the focus on scams under the decade long Congress-led dispensation at the Centre.

The AW scandal came to light in 2010, and led the UPA government to order a CBI probe. The investigation gathered momentum after the Modi government took over in 2014. The agency decided to fast-track the investigation and a special investigation team was set up under Rakesh Asthana, the current acting CBI director, in June.
