The Bengal government said that the army was denied permission to hold the exercises. The Army, however, produced correspondence with the state’s police and civil administration, and also asserted that the exercises are held every year.

In parliament, Ms Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress were backed by opposition parties.

Trinamool lawmaker Derek O’Brien said the Defence Minister’s letter has been “leaked” to the media before it could reach Ms Banerjee. “Mamata Banerjee will give a strong reply,” he added.
