Jayalalithaa was a member of the Rajya Sabha from April, 1984 to January, 1989. He recalled that several ministers and others had come to witness Jayalalithaa’s debut in the Upper House. “The gallery was full and when she finished speaking, everyone was praising her articulation,” he said. “It was an excellent speech. It made news that day.

“Kurien said what could have added to the excitement of the members was that she was from the film industry and MPs were curious to see whether she could deliver a speech. “You may or may not agree , she took all decisions keeping in mind the poorest of the poor.

She took decisions for empowerment of women. If you judge her, she is a leader who lives in the hearts of the poor,” he said.
