Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said cyber crime has emerged as “one of the foremost” security threat at global as well as national level but the armed forces have not witnessed “institutional attacks”.

The Minister also said information on Indian Army’s deployment along the borders is regularly sought by our adversaries from exchange operators, unsuspecting civilians by using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and mobile calls.

“Cyber-crime has emerged as one of the foremost security threats at global level including at the national level. Since armed forces function on exclusive private networks, these establishments have not witnessed institutional attacks,” Parrikar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

He said cyber attacks are largely faced by internet connected personal computers (PCs).

In an another reply, he said information on Indian Army’s deployment along the borders is regularly sought by our adversaries from exchange operators, unsuspecting civilians by using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and mobile calls among others.

“Detailed Standing Operating Procedures are in place to ensure such calls are not connected to any authorised subscriber. In addition, troops and families are regularly sensitised to thwart inimical design of our adversaries,” he said.
