Homage were paid on Thursday to two army jawans, who were killed in a militant ambush yesterday in Baramulla, with Srinagar-based Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua joining the other officers and men at a solemn ceremony here.
A separate wreath-laying ceremony was held for Jammu and Kashmir Police constable Pritpal Singh who was also killed along with the two army jawans in the same ambush.
Bodies of soldiers 29-year-old N K Shakti and 32-year-old Joy Jit Ghosh, wrapped in tricolour, were brought to Badami Bagh cantonment here where the army paid befitting tributes to them in a solemn ceremony, an army spokesman said.
The two soldiers, along with a policeman, were killed when militants attacked their convoy at Khojabagh in Baramulla district in the wee hours of yesterday. Three soldiers and a policeman were also injured in the attack and are undergoing treatment.
“Lt Gen Dua and all ranks paid homage to the national heroes on behalf of a proud nation,” the spokesman said.
He said Shakti, a passionate soldier from Chatra in Jharkhhand, had joined army at the age of 18 years and was a person who worked with his heart for whatever task given to him.
The deceased is survived by wife Khushboo and a six- year-old son.
Shakti was a skilled hockey player, the spokesman said.
Sepoy Ghosh had joined the army at the age of 20 years and had earned the respect as a warrior, the spokesman said.
Hailing from 24 Parganas North, West Bengal, the deceased is survived by wife Priyanka Ghosh and new born baby girl, he said.
He was an ardent football player and had represented Army Service Corps Central team.
The spokesman said the mortal remains of the martyrs would be flown for last rites to their native places where they will be laid to rest with full military honours.
Earlier, a memorial service was held at police lines for Constable Pritpal Singh last evening.
Deputy Inspector General of police, north Kashmir, Uttam Chand led the police and civil officers in laying the floral wreaths on the body of the martyr.
The deceased policeman is survived by wife, 70-year-old mother, 19-year-old daughter and 25-year-old son, a police spokesman said.
