On Sunday morning the Indore-Patna Express train jumped the tracks near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, wrecking most of the coaches. At least 97 people have been killed in their sleep and near about 500 people have been injured by this mishap.
Fourteen coaches of the train travelling with more than 500 passengers rolled off track at around 3 am in Pukhraya, 100 km from Kanpur, when most passengers were sleeping.
“We heard a deafening noise…I am lucky to be alive and safe,” said one of the passengers. Most of them were jolted awake when they heard a bang and were thrown around. The passengers are being rescued to the nearby town so that they can avail another train or bus to their destinations.
More bodies were pulled out from the two coaches that fell on the side, said Daljeet Singh Choudhary, a senior police officer. Hours after the crash, a team of army personnel, doctors joined some 250 rescue workers.
