Half the kids in the 6-14 years age group don’t attend schools in India. While over 27% children in the age group in Bihar are not attending school, that figure is as low as just under 6% in Lakshadweep Islands.
During the survey named ‘Out of School’, it was found that the number children not attending school increased from 2,018 in 2014 to 2,431 in 2015.
The survey was completed in December 2015, and the data has now been sent to the Centre for keeping the record. During the yearly exercise conducted by the administration’s education department, it was also found that a majority of the children did not go to school either due to poverty, unwillingness to go to school, or both.
For the survey, the education department had divided the district into 9 parts: Slum, baggers, brick kiln, tent houses, construction works/factories, orphanage, dhabas, railway station and residential areas.
After identifying “out of school” students, the department claimed that it got the children enrolled in government schools and also gave them accommodation. Ranjeet Kumar, district coordinator of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, said most of the children who were not found in school were living in industrial areas and their parents had migrated for casual jobs to the city. “Mostly, their parents can’t afford the school fees. However, some parents do not want their kids to go to school as they want them to earn,” he said.
