Jung is a 1973 batch IAS officer and was vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia university before he was appointed Delhi’s LG on July 9, 2013.

The LG’s office issued a statement on Thursday stating, “Jung has submitted his resignation to the government of India.” Without citing reasons for the decision, 65-yearold said he “thanked the prime minister for all the help and cooperation he received during his tenure as the LG”.

Jung also thanked Delhiites for support and affection, especially during the one-year central rule. He also thanked the Delhi CM for “his association” in the last two years.

Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia spoke to Jung on Thursday evening. While Kejriwal said he was surprised at the move, Sisodia said he had asked the LG about the reason for his resignation and was told that he was tired and wanted to return to academics.

“I spoke to him and asked him for a confirmation. He said he was feeling tired and would like to work in academics. I asked him if there was any special reason and he said he was done (with his role as the LG),” Sisodia said.

While there were reports initially of AAP alleging that Jung was “compelled” by the Centre to quit, the official line was conciliatory. “Despite all the ups and downs, there is no personal animosity. In fact, this is not about an individual at all. We wish him all the best,” AAP’s national treasurer Raghav Chadha said.
