Primi Minister Narendra Modi became the first Prime Minister of India to serve langar (community meal) at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Last night Narendra Modi visited the temple, the revered seat of Sikhs, along with the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani. There Modi took a bucket in hand and started serving people langar.

Chief Information Officer Gurbachan Singh told PTI that though almost all the Prime Ministers have visited Golden Temple to pay obeisance but no one ever participated in the serving of langar.

“Modi is the first Prime Minister of the country who served langar to the devotees in the Golden Temple,” Singh said Sunday. “We were caught unawares…Modi saw devotees taking langar…went to the hall and started serving the langar to them,” he said.

Despite heavy security and thick cordon of SGPC task force, devotees got a chance to click selfies with Modi.

The gurdwara authorities were told that Modi and Ghani might partake langar during their visit. The leaders paid obeisance at the temple wearing caps.
