The Gujarat high court on Thursday quashed the state’s BJP government’s order guaranteeing 10% reservation for the economically backward classes (EBCs) in educational institutions, reported Times of India.
Keeping the 2017assembly elections in mind, the Anandiben Patel government had issued a notifcation on 1 May, 2016 granting 10% quota for EBCs in higher education and government jobs.
Gujarat minister Nitin Patel said that the government will appeal against the HC’s order in the the Supreme Court.
Rajkot-based writer and social worker, Jayantibhai Manani had challenged the state government’s order in the HC in June. The court had then issued notices to the government.
The petitioner had cited the Supreme Court order in the Indra Sawhney case which had challenged reservations granted to OBCs on the recommendations of the Mandal commission in the early 1990s.
