President François Hollande is orchestrating his country’s response to the horrific attack in Nice just hours after he announced plans to take France out of a state of emergency.
The French leader is returning to Paris from the city of Avignon to hold an urgent meeting at the Interior Ministry.
Government sources confirmed that Mr Hollande activated the inter-ministerial crisis centre in the wake of Thursday night’s incident, which left at least 73 people dead when a truck drove through crowds watching fireworks as they celebrated Bastille Day in the south of the country.
