Railways’ earnings by the end of September have declined by Rs 3,208.51 crore as compared to September last year, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

The railways earned Rs 79,475.42 crore up to September 2016 as against Rs 76,268.91 crore for the corresponding period last year, a decline of 4.04%, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in reply to a written question.

While passenger earnings was up by 3.85%, goods earnings were down by over 9 per cent in comparison to the last year.

The railways earned Rs 23,345.05 crore in passenger sector as against Rs 22,480.02 crore last year, while goods earnings were Rs 47,974.03 crore in September this year as against Rs 52,771.83 crore for the same period last year.

Gohain said reasons for decline in freight earnings up to September 2016 are due to reduction in loading by 8.67 million tons as compared to the last year.
