A Central Reserve Police Force officer died and 9 others were injured as a group of terrorists struck at Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar this morning. Officers said the gunfire has now stopped and combing operations are on.

The attack started around 8 am, officials said. It is suspected that two or more terrorists are involved, officials said. Among the injured are 8 men from the CRPF and one police officer. The officials are yet to recover any bodies of terrorists.

Nowhatta is not far from Srinagar’s Bakshee Stadium, where Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti participated in the Independence Day celebrations. The capital of Jammu and Kashmir is on high security alert for Independence Day.
