Assam continued to be ravaged by flood as an estimated 19 lakh people were affected in the state due to heavy rainfall and swelling of rivers triggered by incessant rains in upper catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh to make an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of Nagaon, Morigaon and Kaziranga in Assam. The Minister will visit Bhagatgaon Camp of flood-affected residents in Morigaon (Assam) and also hold meetings with Assam CM and other state government officers.
The Kaziranga National Park has been inundated. The park authorities have recovered a male rhino carcass. He had drowned in the Diphloo River and was recovered near the Siga camp under the Agoratoli camp in the Kaziranga National Park. Another rhino was found dead about two days earlier due to incessant rains. The Kaziranga National Park remains closed during the Monsoon season. Visitors are not allowed during this time as the park remains susceptible to flooding.
Normally, Southwest Monsoon rains continue in the northeastern states even after September. It rains quite well in the month of October as well. The retreating wing of Southwest Monsoon brings sporadic rains. Thus, the Kaziranga National Park remains shut for visitors till about October. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the Assam floods have submerged chunks of roads in Morigaon, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts. The worst affected districts include Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Goalpara, Tinsukia, Dhubri, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Chirang, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath and Darrang.
