The Vadodara Municipal Corporation is gearing up to soon make the city open defecation free after having completed the construction of 23,999 household and 850 public toilets, a senior official said today.

The VMC has met the target and is to be declared open defecation free soon, municipal commissioner Vinod Rao said, adding that the civic body has met the target for construction of 18,198 home and 85 public toilets in the city.

The state government is expected to soon declare all the 12 administrative wards of Vadodara city as free from open defecation.

A government team had visited various spots in different localities of the city some days back to verify the claims and made several suggestions which were implemented, Rao said.

It is the aim and resolve of the VMC to make the city open defecation free during this month, he said.

The VMC, through a notification issued earlier, had sought objections and suggestions from people for making all the 12 administrative wards of the city free from open defecation, he said.

The notification period had ended on April 28. Nobody objected to it while people made several suggestions, he said.

The VMC had also launched an awareness drive in the city in this regard.
