Qandeel Baloch, a social media start who has been famous for her outrageous opinions on social media about women rights and empowerment. She who has been a daughter, a sister and a bread winner of the family; The self-made young woman from a modest background when started to entertaining for a cause — women’s empowerment — the objections grew more vicious. The condemnation was such that yesterday on the 16th of July, she was strangled to death by her own brother, Waseem Azeem, who said he killed here for honor and has no regret about it. Waseem was found at Dera Ghazi Khan, about at a 100 Kilometers of distance form his house in Multan, Pakistan and arrested.
According to reports from Al jazeera, Qandeel’s Post-mortem report says that her mouth and nose were shut close tight before here death, causing her death due to lack of oxygen in the body. Pakistan is largely conservative and a patriarchal nation; as she appeared on social media and national television to speak on topics like female empowerment, liberation of women and dressed herself in a “revealing” manner completely disregarding the orthodox mindset of the society, the rage was coming.
Currently this “honor killing” has caused a outrage in the society. The activists in Pakistan have been shaken by this act as this is no more confined to small places but is very relevant in major cities too, and the death of this 26 year old is an alarm for awakening. This is mindset that needs a change because it is annoyingly cruel.
Qandeel had started her career by auditioning on Pakistan Idol and later she launched her own social media enterprise, posting videos about her daily life and opinions, which went viral. On her final, July 4th post she had about 800,000 fans.
