The United States has strongly condemned the comments by the Prime Minister of Pakistan regarding the nuclear warfare.
According to a report by PTI, conveying the displeasure a senior State Department Official of the US said, “We made that (American objection on nuclear threat) clear to them (Pakistan). Repeatedly.”
The official who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, did not reveal the level at which the message was conveyed to Pakistan.
“It is very concerning. It is a serious thing,” the official said on condition of anonymity, when asked about Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s assertions, twice in the last 15 days, that his country could use nuclear weapons against India, reported PTI.
The official also said that US has serious concerns regarding the safery of the nuclear weapons in Pakistan and the US closely monitors them “always” regardless of “what they said on this particular occasion.”
The statements are seen as “irresponsible” behaviour by top Pakistani leadership.
Meanwhile, the United States continued to urge both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions following the Uri terror attack that claimed the lives of 18 soldiers.
Deputy State Department Spokesman Mark Toner told reporters at his daily news conference that nuclear-capable states have “a very clear responsibility to exercise restraint regarding nuclear weapons and missile capabilities”.
“We continue to urge actions to combat and de-escalate – and delegitimise terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Haqqani Network, as well as Jaish-e-Mohammad,” Toner said in the press conference.
