On Thursday, the Trump White House floated a proposal for a 20% tariff on all imported goods, in part to bank roll the proposed wall with Mexico, before reeling back after a furore when analysts pointed out that it would just mean the American taxpayer would be footing the bill for the wall.
The White House later clarified that it was just one idea among a “buffett of options” being discussed, even as economic pundits castigated the administration for not thinking through the proposal. The consensus was that such a tariff would trigger a trade war with other countries with the end result of costs being passed on to the consumer.
