The immersion procession of city’s Ganesh idols concluded at Mumbai this morning with over 2.40 lakh idols being immersed across hundred water bodies in the city during the ten-day festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said today.
The idol of city’s most famous Ganesh mandal, Lalbaugcha Raja, was immersed at Girgaum chowpatty around 8 AM, almost 20 hours after it had set out.
As many as 2,40,477 Ganesh idols were immersed during the festivity. The last day of the festival witnessed 41,957 immersions in natural spots including seashores while 3,248 idols were immersed in artificial ponds, installed by BMC to encourage environment friendly move.
“A total of 31 artificial ponds had been created for immersion, while there are 69 natural water bodies across the megapolis earmarked by the BMC,” he said.
The immersion procession had begun at 8 AM yesterday and despite the incessant and heavy rains, revellers came out on roads in large numbers to bid adieu to ‘Ganpati Bappa’.
The BMC and city police had made adequate arrangements, including deployment of choppers and drones to ensure smooth movement of procession.
