Amid raging row over sharing of Cauvery river water in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, CPI(M) on Tuesday urged the people there to maintain calm over Supreme Court order in this regard and asked the two state governments to ensure lives and properties of people are protected.

“The Politburo appeals to people of both states to maintain calm over SC decision on sharing of Cauvery river waters. It calls upon state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to ensure the protection of people’s lives and properties,” the party said in a statement.

Noting the issue as long-standing one, the Politburo also pitched for resolving the same through negotiations and mutual agreement on how to share the water.

“Such disputes cannot be resolved by whipping up passions amongst the people of both the states and pitting them against each other,” the Politburo added.

Protests erupted in Karnataka after Supreme Court on September 5 ordered Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and other states over a period of 10 days to ameliorate plight of farmers there.

Modifying that order yesterday, the apex court reduced the quantum of water to be released to 12,000 cusecs, but extended the period over which it will be supplied to September 20.

One person was killed and another injured in police firing in Karnataka yesterday as the row turned violent, escalating tensions.

As Bengaluru witnessed widespread violence bringing it on the edge, night curfew was imposed in 16 police station limits late last night.
