NEW DELHI: Over 250 students were detained by Delhi Police, including the mother and the sister of the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, near India Gate on Sunday afternoon.

Students gathered near India Gate for a candlelight vigil organised by JNUSU in protest against the inability of Delhi Police and the JNU administration to locate Ahmed. The students alleged that the police misbehaved with the protesters, including Fatima Nafees, Ahmed’s mother.

Police claimed that the students were not permitted to gather at India Gate, but were permitted to stage their demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

“Delhi Police misbehaved with Najeeb’s mother. She was beaten up and dragged into the police van. His sister was also detained,” said Satarupa Chakraborty, general secretary of JNUSU.

Chief minister Arvind Kej riwal rushed to Mayapuri police station, where Najeeb’s mother was taken and camped there till she reached the university after release.
