Around 500 students, including some from Jamia Millia Islamia and DU, had gathered for the protest. As they tried to reach India Gate–all approaches of which were blocked by the police–they were put on buses and taken to police stations. While some of them were taken to the Mandir Marg police station, others were taken to Tilak Marg, Parliament Street and Mayapuri police stations.

“Police have brutally beaten us and broken our phones. Many protesters have been detained. The cops were openly threatening to shoot us,” said Mohit Kumar Pandey, president of JNUSU.

Police said that they had denied permission to assemble near India Gate as prohibitory orders are in force. They were advised to assemble at Jantar Mantar, but they did not follow the advisory. “Delhi Police stopped the protesters at various locations and dissuaded them from moving towards India Gate. Some of them were taken to police stations to stop them from marching ahead,” said a statement from the police.Depender Pathak, joint commissioner (southwest), said that Nafees was asked to enter the bus as there was pandemonium during the protest, but she refused and lay down in the middle of the road.

“We waited for her to move to the bus on her own, but later had to lift and take her inside the vehicle. Adequate number of woman constables were deployed for this,” said Pathak. Police said they had to act quickly as there was a possibility of her being injured.
