The ambitious ‘Act East’ policy launched by India has complemented the ‘Look West’ policy of Thailand leading to an increase in trade between the two countries, a Thailand diplomat said today.
“Trade between the countries has significantly improved in the past two decades especially when India’s Act East policy complemented Thailand’s Look West policy,” Krongkanit Rakcharoen, who recently took over as the new Consul General of Thailand in Chennai, said after calling on Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah here.
Stating that Thailand and India share “historical relations” in terms of social, economic and cultural interests, she added that the Indian diaspora working in Thailand strengthened the bond between the two countries.
According to a Raj Bhavan release, Rosaiah said many pilgrimages by Buddhists in India result in large inflow of Thai tourists and added that the Thai language has influence of Indian languages Sanskrit and Pali.
Deputy Consul General Pornpimol Sugandhavanija, Consul Commercial Jittima Nakamano, Consular Officer Syed Mohamed Yusuf, Governor’s secretary Ramesh Chand Meena were also present on the occasion.
