JNU has suspended with immediate effect a professor and Vice President of its teachers’ association over allegations of financial irregularities and fraud.
Ashish Agnihotri, a professor at JNU’s Centre of Languages, was yesterday suspended by the university. However, the period of suspension has not been defined yet.
“Dr Agnihotri has been placed under suspension with immediate effect. The order has been issued after approval from the competent authority,” the suspension order said.
There were complaints against Agnihotri of financial irregularities and fraudulent dealings in claiming the LTC allowances.
Representations were also made by certain quarters to HRD ministry, raising complaints against the professor and demanding institution of an inquiry against him.
Agnihotri, when contacted, refused to comment on the allegations and the suspension.
The university officials remained tight-lipped about whether the decision has been taken after investigation by any committee or is a punitive action. It was also not immediately known whether the decision has been placed before the Executive Council, the highest decision making body of the university.
