“You could put a lot of blame on Cooky but actually it is the responsibility of the batters to make those big scores. You can blame whoever you want, but we have to take responsibility for our own game.
“I think he is pretty set on captaining for a few years to come and I hope he does because I think he is a brilliant leader and I’ve really enjoyed playing under him. I’m quite happy with the role I’m playing at the moment and genuinely, honestly I think he is the right man.”
Cook is the highest run-scorer for England in Test history with 10934 runs in 138 matches and counting. He averages 46.72 in the longest format and has scored 30 hundreds and 53 half-centuries.
England will face India in the fourth Test at Mumbai from December 8. The hosts currently lead the five-match series 2-0. Root is optimistic that England can turn around their fortunes in the next match if they can tackle India’s spin attack.
“We haven’t got it right in the last two games,’ said Root. ‘We’ve shown we can do it, because we did it in the first game. But if we want to stay in this series, we need to get big runs early on.”
