Making of Durga: Soil from a courtesan courtyard

After Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali portrayed in his 2002 superhit movie “Devdaas” the ritual of using the soil of a prostitute’s courtyard to create the Durga idol, has become widely known to people.

But very few people actually know the reason behind this ritual of giving sudden respect and admiration to the prostitutes, who are otherwise seen as fallen or outcast by the whole society.
