There is a common belief about the origin of this ritual. It is said that the men who visit prostitutes for sexual pleasures leaves his purity and virtue outside the door of her home and thus making the soil virtuous.

That soil is known as the “punya mati” (pure soil), which according to the ritual, needs to be begged from a prostitute by the person who creates the Durga idol.

Popular belief dictates that Goddess Durga would be displeased if those who worship her do not take the blessings of the prostitutes.
