“You made the nation stand in line. You doubted the honesty of citizens, their hard-earned income. Modiji owes an explanation to this nation, especially those whom he has forced to toil in queues for days –farmers, women, labourers and sincere hardworking people –whether these records are true or false,” the Congress vice-president said referring to Modi’s claim that while demonetisation is causing hardships, it will clean up black money .
Claiming that demonetisation was not a surgical strike on black money , but on the poor, Gandhi alleged that it was “meant to benefit 50 rich families which are Modi’s favourites”, including Vijay Mallya. The PM, he added, would not waive farmer loans, but since he could not bring back the money taken as loans by the 1% rich, he was using the money of the poor to waive off this bad debt.
Gandhi kick-started his visit to Gujarat by offering prayers at the Umiya Mataji temple in Unjha -a revered pilgrimage of Patidars who were present in large numbers at his rally. “Let Modiji institute an independent committee to investigate these records. There are I-T officers’ signatures on these records which state that an inquiry should be conducted. But nothing has happened in the last two years,” said the Congress neta.
