BHUBANESWAR: Police drew flak for going soft on the ruling BJD, whose youth wing workers illegally took out a bike rally and allegedly attacked BJP workers here during Wednesday’s shutdown, sponsored by the saffron party in protest against the mayor’s alleged sex scandal.
“We squarely blame the police for the violence that broke out during our peaceful protest. Police illegally allowed Youth BJD workers to attack us and suppress our protest. Several of our workers and common people were injured after being attacked by BJD supporters in the presence of police. Why did the police stand like mute spectator,” asked BJP leaderSajjan Sharma, adding “We doubt whether police will ever probe fairly into the charges against ruling party mayor Ananta Jena into the sex scandal and his role behind the recent suspicious death of engineering student Ashutosh aka Rishi Mohanty”.
DCP Satyabrata Bhoi admitted the Youth BJD did not obtain permission to take out the motorcycle rally. “We will initiate legal action against the Youth BJD leaders. We are also examining the CCTV footages in the city where incidences of violence were reported. Cases will be registered against the lawbreakers,” Bhoi told TOI.
