The other reason for reduction in withdrawals is increased use of alternatives to cash to make payments. From debit and credit cards to e-wallets, interbank money transfers and cheques, residents have begun evaluating and using non-cash options, say bank officials.
The past 10 days also witnessed an in crease in the supply of Rs 500 notes from the RBI money chest to banks. Though banks could do with more Rs 500 notes, its regular infusion has helped ease the ATM crisis. Earlier, ATMs that dispensed Rs 100 notes only would run out of cash within hours of being refilled. Not any longer.
