India Today reported that Nalanda University, the ancient point of convergence for many Indian scholars, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Travellers from all parts would agree with the fact that India is one of the most beautiful heritage destinations in the world. And now, another feather has been added to the cap of India’s heritage recognition as Bihar’s Nalanda University has been added to the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
UNESCO tweeted the news on their twitter account and posted beautiful pictures of the heritage site.
PMO India’s official Twitter account retweeted UNESCO’s tweet, which said, “Just inscribed as @UNESCO #WorldHeritage Site: Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavira at Nalanda, Bihar #India”
Located at a distance of about 95 kilometres from Patna, the ancient Nalanda University was a major Mahavihara or a large Buddhist monastery that also doubled up as an important centre of learning from the 5th to 1200 CE in the erstwhile kingdom of Magadha.
Although there was a doubt whether Nalanda would be declared as a heritage site by UNESCO as allegedly there were several weaknesses in the submitted dossier, the ruins of this ancient university has been finally successful in getting an international recognition it always deserved, reported India Today.
