With banks closed over the weekend, ATMs in the city continued to see long lines of people trying to withdraw money. With some ATMs shut and others running out of cash quickly, many Mumbaikars had to return empty-handed despite braving the queues. “I withdrew Rs 2,500 after waiting in line for about half-an-hour. The situation seems to have improved,” said 52-year-old Radheshyam Dwivedi at a State Bank of India ATM in Santacruz West. However, he could not deposit money at the ATM due to equipment failure.

“The government should have introduced the new Rs-500 notes in large quantities early on, rather than the Rs-2000 notes. I think that’s where they went wrong. Most daily business is conducted with Rs-500 notes. Things should get better in the coming days,” Dwivedi added.
